2009 IMPACT GRANT AWARDS
AISD Family Involvement Program This grant will be used to purchase science themed books. The books will be used to teach parents about early literacy skills and the early science processes through parent-child workshops that will prepare children to master the Kindergarten TEKS.
The learner response system addresses the goals for teachers and students to obtain immediate feedback during class in order to gauge student understanding of topics presented to them. Atherton Elementary The creation of this science garden will allow students of Atherton Elementary to experience nature with all of their senses and to practice art and science skills with actual organic nature to student and explore. Bryant Elementary This project will provide additional material support and a safe environment during their lunch period to the 111 students who failed at least one subject area of the 2007-08 TAKS. Corey Elementary This project will improve math problem solving, reading fluency, reading comprehension and writing achievement for 110 third grade students. Ellis Elementary Spanish-speaking parents will be provided with auditory and dual language materials for their ELS or bilingual children. Students will have the opportunity to read at home and involve parents as their build foundation of early literacy skills. Gunn Junior High A dated section of the library will receive new biography books and digital technology to support TEKS-based classroom assignments and encourage a love of independent learning. Hill Elementary Additional beginner reader books with accompanying Accelerated Reader Quizes will be provided in the library to improve early reading skills and promote enthusiasm for reading to students in grades K-2. Knox Elementary This project is designed to help create classrooms that foster the intellectual and social development of young children that supports the alignment to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and helps lay the foundation for future academic success. Miller Elementary The Eureka Lab will provide a science lab environment in which students can experiment. The goal of the environment is to facilitate improvement in student TAKS and encourage them to pursue more interest in science.
By projecting images from picture books and graphics novels, students with language barriers will be better able to comprehend text. Students will have opportunities to increase their reading levels and be actively engaged during classroom activities. Maurisa Riley To improve student learning in the classroom, this hand held calculator project will be used with interactive lesson plans for students. Shackelford JHS This library additional will consist of Playaway technology (self-contained audio books with earphones) that allow students access to modern and classic literature in a new and innovative way, focusing on reducing failure rates and increasing reading acquisition skills. Short Elementary Short Elementary will have a month long celebration of math. Students will compete in math facts and problem solving competitions, attend a math rally and a family game night. They will be immersed in math throughout school.
